Help us to look after the river and surrounding environment by carrying

out a variety of practical conservation tasks.

 

This event will take place every Thursday from 10am -12pm during the spring and summer and alternate Thursdays during the winter. Please contact Laura Proudfoot for more details - ljproudfoot@growing2gether.org

Friday 4th August 10 - 12 - Annual Butterfly Count - FREE EVENT

Following an I.D. sheet, see how many different species you can find and learn how to attract butterflies to your garden. Takes place in the meadow near Riverside Community Centre.

 

Thursday 21st September 10 - 12 approx -  Fungi Foray  - location TBC 

Fungi enthusiast Chris Lusby Taylor will lead a walk through one of our local woodlands and share his knowledge on the various kinds of edible and poisonous fungi we have growing locally.

Saturday 30th September 10-4  - Annual River Clean Up. 

Please help us clean up the River Lambourn, which is an incredibly diverse ecological habitat and a beautiful local feature. Waders and equipment are provided.

Evening Talk - John Dellow from West Berkshire Barn Owl Group.

This will be held at the Riverside Community Centre, Rosemoor Gardens, Turnpike.

RIVERFLY MONITORING TRAINING

Become a riverfly monitor through a Citizen Science Training opportunity and be part of a national monitoring scheme which checks on the health of our rivers.

This is a FREE course but spaces are limited and booking is essential.

Thursday 20th April - 7.30 - 9pm approx

Evening Talk "Garden Moths in West Berkshire" by Barry Murrer.

Barry is a local moth enthusiast who will show us how to classify the different moth species, trap and release moths safely and weather permitting, we will go outside for a moth trapping lesson.  We hope to find at least 1 of the 2,500 types of moth!

Thursday 30th March 10 - 4

Join the volunteers and ARK (Action for the River Kennet) when we will take part in The Yellow Fish initiative which highlights the issue of  pollution in our rivers.  This involves glueing discs near to drains to remind people "only rain down the drain". Please contact Anna Forbes at ARK anna@riverkennet.org if you would like to come along.

Do not feel obliged to stay for the whole day, but if you can, bring a packed lunch.  All equipment, materials and refreshments are provided.

River Restoration Training Day

The next installment of our training programme that aims to teach volunteers how to restore the River mattresses and faggots to prevent siltation. There will also be land based activities such as cutting back vegetation and litter picking. Bring a picnic and get stuck in!

River Restoration Training Day

We will be continuing the work on the river bank by restoring the faggots and mattresses and maybe some more planting. Litter picking and other land based activities will also be on offer. Bring a packed lunch and suitable clothing and learn loads about practical river conservation.

Want to be the next Riverfly Monitor in the local area? Interested in wildlife and ecology? This will be an instructional day aimed at training those volunteers committed to recording the riverfly in a specific location on the River Lambourn. Life of the River Day

Come and find out what wildlife can be found in and around the river. There will be river dipping, eels on display, fun activities and crafts. Bring a picnic and the kids and enjoy the meadow! There will also be a chance to find out more about the Riverfly monitoring training that we will be offering.

In the wake of Otters

Nicola Chester (NWN Nature Notes and RSPB columnist) is also the author of Otters, a lively and engaging natural history of the modern British otter, written for the RSPB's new Spotlight on iconic British Wildlife series. Nicola's talk will take us through an otter's life, including the history of their near extinction and subsequent recovery and how to track them. Nicola will also be selling and signing her book.

Ever wanted to know more about the earth we are walking on? Lesley Dunlop, our local geology expert who lectures at Nothumbria University and member of GeoConservation UK, will provide us with the history of our geology in the Lambourn valley.

Annual River Cleanup

We supply the waders if you supply the labour! We invite community members to participate in a litter pick in and around the River Lambourn. Our clean up days make a huge beneficial impact on the river ecosystem and water quality. Come and join us!
